The treadle sewing machine works by foot movement only. Electricity is not needed and they are inexpensive. With the proper care they will last to the point of being an heirloom for the next generation of sewers in your family. They are simple to use. No complicated instructions to follow.

They are a standard size.  Basically they are all the same. They are convenient for taking care of them and for getting parts when needed.

They are sturdy and reliable, especially when their treated to a proper oiling and cleaning on a regular basis. They sit on a table or have their very own cabinet, which can be made out of metal or wood.

The first thing that needs to be done when you purchase one of these gems is to give it a complete oiling. It will need to be a product specifically for lubricating a sewing machine. All moving parts need to be oiled. Check on top of the machine and below, even the treadle itself.

Also, before you start sewing it will need to have a thorough cleaning. Then check the tension on the belt. It will need to be quite snug. If the belt is loose, you will need to tighten it. If the belt is damaged, you will need to replace it.

Before you actually start sewing you will need to learn to control it. Get comfortable with using a treadle. It just isn’t pressing a pedal, this is up and down, moving your feet in a smooth, continuous motion. Practice with a piece of paper until you have the hang of your feet and hands working together.
