Antique Writing Desk
An antique writing desk is one of the most popular antique pieces among those who like to collect antiques. Desks, like old chests, are popular antiques because desks made in the 1800’s or earlier are completely hand crafted. Antiques were not mass-produced which means they are valuable. Collectors and museums find antique desks to be one of the more popular pieces they come across. Look for these for your own home in antique shops and even second hand shops.
There are different styles of antique desks because carpenters create each with a hand made method unique to each craftsman. One of the most popular desks is the roll top desk; these are popular because they have a number of unique features. When you lift the lid, you will find cubbyholes, drawers, and other items that make the desk unique.
Because these desks have been made across the world, the styles vary based on the location where each was made and the person who made it. You may find a French style desk that was designed in Long Island because the maker was an immigrant from France. Some styles are less extravagant. These less extravagant desks were probably made for a classroom, housewife, or a business that needed a simple desk.
The more extravagant desks had been created for the upper class citizens who could afford to pay for the expensive craftsmanship that goes into making an antique desk. Italian and Spanish antique desks are some of the most expensive because Italian and Spanish desks are considered the best around. They have detailed engraving and other unique features that make them worth thousands of dollars.
Victorian style desks can sell for many thousands of dollars because of the quality. These desks were made for royalty, the wealthy and privileged members of 18th century Europe. They are often made from solid oak and hand crafted by a master carpenter. Victorian antique writing desks are the top of the line, hard to find, and very expensive.
