Beginners Guide to Purchasing a Laptop
Laptops are a must have for many people. If this is your first time purchasing a laptop, your head may be spinning trying to differentiate between different sizes, brands, RAM, and GB. Here are some tips on determining what you need and what will meet your needs.
First, you need to understand a little bit about the laptops capacity. The three things you will be looking at are RAM or memory, the processor or CPU, and the hard drive. With all of these, higher numbers mean better. If you plan on gaming and watching movies all day long, go for the highest within your budget. If you want to use the laptop for work and school and plan on downloading some programs, you will want a mid range laptop. Even with lower end laptops, like laptops under $500, you can find some decent options that will meet an average user’s needs.
Most laptops now come with a lithium-ion battery, also called a li-on battery. They will be rated with a number, a 3 cell or a 6 cell, or even higher. Li-on batteries are easily upgradeable, if you see a great laptop with a low battery life, see if you can get an upgrade. If not, you can always carry around a replacement in your laptop bag.
If you are not a techie, you may not be interested in learning about the best operating systems out there. There is a great difference, though. To the average user, there may not appear to much of a difference, but if you will be using your laptop for specific things, check out your options with operating systems. With most laptops, you can upgrade or change operating systems if you are not happy, but it will mean more work on your part.
Wifi may be the reason you are choosing a laptop. You want to be portable. Maybe you want to connect to your family’s wifi hub, or maybe you want to work online at Starbucks. It is standard for laptops to come with wireless capacity, but if your laptop doesn’t you will need to get another piece of equipment to hook it up. Laptops are fairly simple, once you get past a few technological basics.
