Purchasing a first pair of high quality leather tall equestrian riding boots is a significant event for the serious horseman or horsewoman. Tall boots indicate a rider’s serious passion for the equestrian lifestyle and an interest in competitive sportsmanship. They also involve a financial investment separating those interested in performance versus the casual weekend rider.

Regardless of the brand selected, leather equestrian riding boots should receive regular and attentive care to preserve their elegant appearance. Living the equestrian lifestyle is not an inexpensive proposition and taking the time to maintain and care for tall boots will also protect the owner’s investment. There are four basic elements involved in the proper care of an equestrian riding boot.

Riding boots are going to get wet and it is important to permit them to dry prior to cleaning them. Do not put them on the radiator of in front of the fireplace as cracked and brittle leather will be the result. Once fully dry, use a soft cloth and a leather cleaner and conditioner specifically designed for boots, there are many suitable products available at online equestrian retail sites.

Many boot cleaning products will also condition equestrian riding boots, but some owners prefer to use separate cleaners followed by conditioners. While paste products may be a little easier to apply, most experts recommend liquid conditioners to avoid gumming up the pores naturally found in leather. Be aware that cleaners and conditioners may slightly darken the color of distressed leathers.

Complete the boot care process with a light-handed application of boot polish in the appropriate color. Polish adds the shine and gleam that clearly shows pride of ownership. Once the polish is dried and buffed, some opt to add a coat of leather protector as a final step.  A few moments of maintenance means a lifetime of riding enjoyment.
