It is important to note that silver plated flatware will not withstand the rigors of the dishwasher. A case in point: I had a very lovely set of plated flatware, in an elegant pattern, that I cherished … that is, until I went to visit my grandmother for a week with my daughter – a toddler at the time. This left my husband ‘on his own’. When I returned, he’d run the dishwasher with everything he’d used during that week – including my lovely silver plated flatware! I almost fainted when I opened the dishwasher. Much of the silver plate had disappeared, leaving the underlying metal showing where once had been the silver plating. (He’s not the housekeeping expert!) So be sure to let any kitchen helpers know this little caveat. This really poses only a minor extra chore, as you can soak them in a pan of sudsy water as you load the dishwasher. Your flatware will clean up in a snap after a few minutes of soaking.
