No matter what you do, there is not much chance that you will be able to avoid commercial liability insurance for your business. Somehow you need to be covered, should any of your actions as a business cause harm or loss to others, and thereby incurring you a financial loss. Most places, it is not even optional to have business liability insurance – perhaps because the plaintiff in a lawsuit against a business could end up with nothing, if the owner of the business is not insured. Causing harm to a client or customer is no joke – you may be able to settle the case out of court, but you will still have to pay up, most likely. Should it come to a court-case, you really will want to have good coverage, as these things can get very expensive. It is bad enough that your public image might be severely damaged – but do you also want to risk going bankrupt in the process?

No – this is something you don’t want to mess up. And yes, there is such a thing as small business liability insurance. If you are small, it is even more important to have good coverage, since your financial capabilities are probably a lot smaller than that of the big companies. Make sure you spend the time needed to understand this fully.

If you are not sure what your insurance policy should cover, you can start by looking at your business and what it does. Do you manufacture your products using potentially dangerous processes – ones that require a high level of safety and education of the workers? Or do you sit alone in your one man office all day? Does your work include handling of things which are sensitive to your clients, or which could cost them a lot of money if anything goes wrong? Is there a lot of risk involved in what you do – and for your clients? These are some of the things you must consider when looking at commercial business liability insurance.
