Keeping a discus fish tank can be scary business, one major disaster can set you back hundreds in fishes. But never fear, unlike the olden days of tropical fish, back in the seventies when little was known about discus fish in the first place, back when the only specimens in tanks we had were wild caught fishes, today we so have a much better understanding of their needs.  So get to setting up that tank, and discover a love for the king of all tropical fishes.

Water Particulars

I am going to say that these vary from breeder to breeder, so ask the aquarist you are getting your fishes from what his breeders prefer.  The most notable experts claim PH of 6.5 to 7.0 and many folks take that with a Hanna digital PH meter.  All aquarists will insist on low ammonia, with a biological filtration wheel, Emperor makes a really good product, as does Marineland.

Everyone also agrees on regular water changes, with twenty five percent every week being the bare minimum you would want to do for your tank, as Discus fish adore fresh water.  Temperature, however, is the one thing I could not get a consensus on, and I heard temperatures of seventy nine to eighty eight degrees Fahrenheit. I cannot account for the deviation and range in this, except to say that I would go to the higher side, most aquarists insist at least eighty five and higher for the Discus.  Slightly acidic, easy water is good, keep it warm, and keep it clean, that is pretty much what you have to do to insure Discus fish bliss, just remember with those heaters to keep them horizontal, not vertical, or the female Discus may attempt to lay eggs on the hot heater, possible burning herself in the process.
