Grapes are sweet tasting fruits that are loved by many people because they have so many uses. Growing grapes at home is quite a challenging task, but the rewards are certainly good. Instead of buying grapes at the supermarket, you can simply pick your own fruit in your back yard. However, there are certain things that you need to consider when planting grapes at home.

The most important thing to remember when learning how to grow grapes at home is to provide the plant with the right climate. They should not be exposed to a climate that is too hot or too cold. In order to grow beautifully, grapes need a sufficient amount of sunlight. You cannot just grow grapes at any time of year. The best ideal season to grow grapes is during spring season. Do not simply pick any kind of grapes because each variety of grapes has its own climate requirement. If you are planning to grow grapes for consumption purposes, then you may choose the sweetest variety. On the other hand, you must also choose those grapes that are best suited for wine if you are planning to make a wine of them. The purpose of growing grapes influences the variety that you will be planting.

In growing grapes, you need to provide them not only enough sunlight, but also sufficient space where they can freely expand their vines. They need a space of at least 4 feet from one another so that they can grow their foliage. However, you need to provide a space of 8 feet between grape plants that are more vigorous.

Grapes are vines, and as such you must provide trellis for climbing. The installation of trellis as a support for the vines should be given thoughtful consideration because the height changes with the change of season. For one thing, trellis need not be vertically long during winter months when the grapes’ growth is very slow. But during the months of summer, the trellis should be long and large because grape plants grow faster during this season. The trellis provides a room for the vines to grow.

Another factor that greatly affects the growth of the grapes is the process of watering. Grape plants need sufficient amount of water during the first few months of their plant life. But be sure that there is a way out for the excess water as this may ruin them. When the fruits start to change in color, you have to minimize giving them water because too much water will ruin the process of ripening.

There is also a need for pruning so that the vines will not compete for space. When this happens, the sunlight cannot properly penetrate to the lower parts of the plant, thereby the thick foliage will decrease the amount of sunlight that these plants get. Another equally essential reason why you need pruning is that this process prevents grapes from producing too much fruits. When there is overproduction of fruits the grapes will not ripen properly.
