When was the last time you and your friends spent an exciting weekend at the lake? If you are like many people out there, you probably want to build up the excitement with a little water skiing. Your family and friends can have a wonderful time water skiing. When you head to the lake, you will enjoy an adventure to remember. That being said, you must remember to follow a few water skiing safety guidelines, so that everyone comes home happy and safe.

This can be a dangerous sport, if you are not careful. However, you don’t need to be afraid of what can happen. Simply follow these safety suggestions, and your water skiing trip will be exciting for everyone. As with any sports activity, water skiing could be risky if you do not take the appropriate safety measures.

Beginners Training

Teaching water skiing or wakeboarding to a newbie can be somewhat tricky. Simply taking somebody who has never been waterskiing before and putting him in the deep water could turn into a disaster. As a substitute start them off in a pool or in shallow water. Allow them a chance to get used to being on the water skis and learn a little control. Once they get used to the skis, use the tow rope and let them get a feel how to come up. If you are using a pool, you can do this by pulling them with the ski rope, and let them get a feel for how to balance themselves. Once they get the hang of it, then you can head on out to the boat, and have a good time.

Always Have a Spotter

One of the worst mistakes that you can make is to just go out alone with the skier. Always make sure you have a spotter. Their job is to keep track of the waterskier, and relay information between them and the driver. If you have a large group in the boat, one person should be designated as the spotter. Agree on a set of hand signals to relay information between the skier and the spotter before you ever set out. This way you can all have a great time, and everything will go safely.

No Life Vests Equals No Water Skiing

A properly fitted ski jacket is vital for everyone getting in the water. Most places it is the law. Look for brightly colored, light weight, neoprene ski vests. This way your skier will be more comfortable, and they can easily be seen by any approaching boats. You don’t want anything to go wrong. However, if something does, you need to be prepared to deal with it. Look around and find style that you like. If you get one that fits properly, you will soon forget you even have it on. It can be annoying sometimes to wear one, but it could be a recipe for disaster if you don’t.

Full Engine Stop On Approach

The boat approaching a down skier is the most dangerous part of your adventure. Be extra careful when approaching the skier in the water. Always shut down the motor, so that your skier is not in danger. If possible, stop a little ways away, and let them come to you. Never turn the motor back on until they are safely in the boat, and the rope is secured. This will keep you from cutting your rope, or hurting your skier. This can be a difficult part to master, but you and your skier will be better off in the long run.

Having a safe water skiing adventure can really liven up the weekend. As long as you do it safely, you can have a wonderful time. Follow these water skiing safety tips, and you will enjoy an experience that you will want to again and again. Be safe, but have fun. Remember, the safety of your skier should always be your number one priority. Other than that, have a great time, and you will go back and do it all over again.
