HVAC History
The first known attempt at a type of central heating system was about 100 AD when the ancient Romans pumped heated air through pipes under the floors and outside. Ever since then, people have been improving the ways to keep their homes warmer in the cold months, adding to that new ways to keep it cool in the hot months and finally to improve the air quality in it. Hence, HVAC, which is regarding the indoor or automobile thermal comfort and air quality, was born. Of course, if you live in the country in the right climate, you do not need a degree to figure it out, simply open the windows so you get a good breeze and you can take care of all three with no problem.
The industrial revolution and HVAC spurred each other along, and no doubt, fed each other. The need for air quality control would be greater to keep the bad air from the different manufacturing plants out of other buildings, and the bigger a building, the greater the need for an efficient way to maintain acceptable temperatures inside of it. Of course, with the realization that we may someday run out of our nonrenewable resources, as well as the fact that we are ruining our own air with pollution, the importance of new and efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning, following EPA guidelines, has pushed this into high gear.
Companies and inventors from around the world are constantly improving it with both system control and higher efficiency. Acceptable indoor air, we now realize, consists of more than just what we can see and smell, the thermal control has to be efficient not only for comfort, but to save our resources as well. And the people want the same quality of HVAC for their cars as they have for their homes. It will be interesting to see what changes will take place in the next fifty years.
