Puppy training pads are one of the best ways to housebreak your new dog. Learning how to apply a few simple principles will help you along the way.  Going about it the wrong way can lead to an unhappy owner and dog.

Lets begin by making use of the fact that it is your puppy’s natural tendency to avoid eliminating near where sleeps or eats. In this example we are going to utilize a dog crate as part of the process. The crate will be his trustworthy habitat where he will feel comfortable.

Place the crate in a smaller room or large closet.  This smaller room will help him to locate where he eats, sleeps and eliminates. A larger room can lead to confusion. Place the crate on one side of the room and the puppy training pads on the other side. At first you may want to put down two or more pads to simplify things for him.

You can lower your cost on these pads by looking for Simple Solution puppy training pads. They are economy puppy training pads.  A puppy training pad holder is also available to hold the pads in place.

Keep your feeding schedule on a predictable, regular basis and his elimination schedule will be more predictable. He will likely need to potty after eating and sleeping. You will need to watch him to determine when he about to go.  Watch for whining, sniffing, and walking back and forth.

When he seems ready to go place him on the pad and give him a command like “go here”. Say the same words each time. Then leave and let him take care of things so he does not become distracted by you. Reward his good behavior with praise and treats.  Never fuss at him for doing things wrong.

If you want to go a step further and show him how to go outdoors this can be done. As he learns what the training pads are for you can give him access to more area of the home. Then begin moving the pads closer and closer to an outside entrance door. When the pad is beside the door and he seems ready to go take him outside. At first you may want to place another pad outside. Soon you will be able to eliminate the pad altogether.

Your puppy pads training will have been successful.
