If there is a shotgun in your home and you are a responsible parent or citizen, you need to protect it with a shotgun cabinet.  The right cabinet can protect children and anybody who is unfamiliar with guns from having an accident with a firearm.

There are two models of shotgun cabinets, wall mounted or the floor model and they can be either light or dark wood.  Where small children are present, the wall mount, high enough to keep them from reaching it, is best, but the floor model will work if there are no children present.  You do need to make sure they remain locked, however, especially when you have visitors.

The shotgun cabinets can be very attractive with carving and designs, so they can accent and fit in with your decor without anyone knowing what is inside.  Or you can store them in less traffic areas such as the garage.

You may purchase these cabinets at sporting good stores or online at the website where shotgun cabinets are being sold.  You can also buy a used cabinet, but always make sure whatever cabinet you purchase is made of sturdy wood and the locks and hinges are secure and workable.

Another very popular way to safeguard shotguns and firearms of all kinds are gun safes.  They come in a wide variety of sizes and offer different amenities, such as fireproof (from thirty minutes to sixty minutes), carpeting, and a choice of whether or not they have shelves.  The smaller ones have one door, but they also come in some with two doors, the size you need depends on how many guns you will store in it.  The single door can open 180 degrees for easy access.  You can have shelves in these for storing pistols or ammunition, and they have special safeguards against break-ins, one of which is the anti-drill plate made of steel.

It is very important to safeguard any firearms that are in your home.  You have only to pick up a newspaper to see where a person, some of which are children, was injured or killed accidentally by a firearm, or one was used to commit a crime.  Protecting your investment in firearms can only come second to knowing you have possibly prevented some horrible thing from happening.  Also, your insurance company may give you a discount if you have a shotgun cabinet.  Ask them, it is sure worth a shot.
