There are a few attributes that are common to a southwestern style home and some of them are specific to the kitchen or breakfast nook. First, every southwestern style home that I have seen has a breakfast nook. Because of the good weather in the southwest, people want to be able to enjoy the sunlight and the amazing views they have. Therefore, nearly everyone has a room connected to their kitchen where they can sit and enjoy the day. A southwestern breakfast nook is a must.

Now, one other attribute that I have noticed when it comes to the breakfast nook is that usually it looks our through a veranda or lanai. Southwestern inspired homes typically have a veranda or lanai running along at least a portion of the back of the house. This is different than a porch. Verandas are roofed areas with no walls that shield you from the harsh sun overhead, while still letting you enjoy the outdoors. A lanai is like a veranda, but is usually screen in. Since the breakfast nook usually looks out through this roofed area, there is not much harsh direct sunlight shining into the breakfast nook windows.

As a result, breakfast nook window curtains, are not usually necessary in a southwestern style home. You do not need the functionality of the curtains to shield you from harsh sunlight, but most people still have them for their decorating purposes. Window treatments are an excellent way to continue a color pallet or lines created by the tops of cabinets in the kitchen. You can even go as far as to make the window treatments in the breakfast nook match the treatments in other rooms in the house. It depends on how eclectic your decorating style is. Is every room different and distinct or do certain theme carry on from room to room?
