Arkham Asylum is a fictional hospital in the DC comic universe. It is well known as the incarceration site for the foes of Batman who have been identified as being insane. Arkham Asylum is located outside of the well known Gotham City. Many of the criminals in the DC universe have been sent to prison in the Arkham Asylum. Although fictional the stories about Batman and the other fictional characters associated with the comics have long been a part of history since their creation in 1974.
