In 2009, TV viewers saw a new sort of ad appear on their TVs—an ad for an electronic book. When advertisers demonstrate the willingness to pay for such an ad, it seems logical to expect the eventual unveiling of an electronic dog collar, and the ads for such a collar. Like the electronic book, any electronic collar is sure to be advertised both online and on television.
What could someone hope to find on an electronic collar? How about this: access to GPS technology? If collar wearing dog s could be tracked with a GPS system, then dog owners would find it much easier to hunt for their missing pets.

In the future the phrase “dog collars” will not refer to a group of rather simple, little noticed objects. In the future, society should anticipate release of a personalized dog collar. The dog owners that bring their pets to dog shows would certainly welcome the arrival of such collars. By placing such a collar on a dog, a dog owner could better call attention to that pet.

Of course, the typical dog owner could make good use of a collar with a personal touch, especially if it also had electronic features. A man’s best friend might thus become his alarm clock as well. The pet’s collar could be fitted with a device that would send a signal to the dog wearing it. Upon receiving that signal, the dutiful pet would be trained to wake its owner.
In the future, dog owners could hear less frantic barking, if they had chosen to buy the proper sort of collar, maybe one with some special equipment. They could train their pets to somehow “turn on” such equipment, upon spying the entrance of a home invader. Of course, that suggestion leads to the following question.

How do you “turn on” a dog collar? Maybe the dog wearing that collar would need to rub it against a hard surface. Maybe the dog would put its nose on some special switch. Today dog owners have remote controls for their TV sets. In the future, they might have remote controls that have the ability to turn on a pet’s collar.
