Rattan garden furniture is essentially wicker garden furniture constructed from the rattan vine. Other types of wicker furniture may be constructed from sea grass, cane, bamboo or reed. Resin wicker rattan garden furniture is specifically rattan wicker style furniture constructed from man made materials. This furniture is basically made from resin, plastic or PVC weaves that are then wicker worked to produce furniture that looks like rattan. The majority of rattan garden furniture on the market today is constructed with this synthetic material. This synthetic rattan garden furniture has a number of positive attributes that lend itself well to use as outdoor furniture and has seen it’s popularity explode.

The main benefit of furniture constructed from synthetic material is that, unlike natural rattan that might be used in wicker bedroom or conservatory furniture, it does not suffer from changeable climates. Natural rattan wicker, if left in damp conditions, has a tendency to develop mildew and mould. UV light can blemish and fade natural rattan after prolonged exposure. Whilst this doesn’t affect the structure of the furniture, it can be unsightly over time. You can identify rattan damaged by moulds and damp by dark spots and stains that develop on the wicker work. These spots are hard, but not impossible to remove. This susceptibility to damp and UV makes the natural rattan wicker furniture great for indoor use, situations where you have the ability to store the furniture indoors when not in use, or if you live in an all year round dry climate.

Resin rattan garden furniture does not suffer from these ill effects. Most weaves are usually sold as being UV resistant and resin or polyester is renowned as a material that is generally hard wearing and unaffected by the damp. Constructed using aluminium frames, the furniture is light weight and easy to position and move as well as being free from deterioration caused by weather. The major benefits of these characteristics are that you can leave the furniture out in all weathers without requiring indoor storage facilities. The other major benefit of synthetic rattan is that the furniture can be produced in any area of the world meaning costs can be driven lower and availability of infinite styles is more widespread than you might otherwise find with natural rattan furniture.
