The Inevitable Competitors of the Kinect
One of the most monumental gaming announcements was made recently, by Microsoft at the E3 Conference. It was there that they revealed more details about a little known project called Project Natal, and among what they said, the official name of Kinect was given. This is a fitting name for the system, as it enables you to “connect” with your games in a way that was never possible before. The reason for this enhanced connectivity is there is no controller utilized with this system, and it is something that can be seamlessly attached to an Xbox 360. This is clearly going to be a revolutionary product with many applications, so the question now is, how long will it take for other companies to catch on?
Nintendo, one of the other leading competitors of Microsoft, pushed the envelope of human and technology interoperability with their Wii, a system that did make use of tracking technology more so than anything that had come before. However, there was still a controller present, which is not the case with the Kinect. With this, your body is the only medium you need to control these Kinect games, a factor that makes it much more engaging and entertaining than traditional video games.
The question that remains is how long it will take for the other companies to step up and develop their own technology of this sort. Nintendo already seems to have a jump on it, and Sony cannot be that far behind. In any fast-paced industry, nobody stays ahead for long before the competitors try to cash in with their own products. It will definitely be the same with this, it’s only a matter of time. Also, there is no telling how long these companies have been working on something like the Kinect, and if so, it could be sooner than later that these alternatives make an appearance.
