I asked this question a while ago and received some really interesting information. The most interesting tidbit was that men have apparently been worried about hair loss for as long as there has been women to impress. There are hieroglyphs on the wall of ancient Egyptian tombs that show a noble man having a hair growth treatment applied to his head by servants. These pictures date from over 5000 years ago. So if you are feeling blue because your hair is starting to thin don’t get depressed, men have been fighting this same battle for over five millennia.

Now to answer the question, the biggest key to preventing hair loss is to start your treatment at the first sign of hair thinning or excess hair loss. If you wake up in the morning and there are more hairs than normal on your pillow then start to research how to prevent hair loss and, most importantly, put into action the information you receive.

I believe the two best hair growth remedies are drugs that have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. The first one, Finasteride, is taken in tablet form once a day. Finasteride works to limit the amount of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT has been found to be the culprit in male pattern hair loss as it bonds with receptors on the hair roots and causes them to stop produce hair material. Limiting the amount of this substance allows the hairs to keep growing.

The second drug, Minoxidil, actually works to protect the hair follicles (roots) from DHT. Minoxidil inhibits the ability of the DHT to bond with the hair follicles thus short circuiting the attack. Minoxidil is usually sold in a 5% solution that is applied to the balding area twice a day.

These are the two best methods for hair loss I have found. For answers on what to do if you have already lost your hair visit me at The Hair Restoration Blog.
