Types of Coffee Roast
Many coffee experts tend to be choosy about exactly what type of brew they like to drink. Various ways of roasting coffee can actually affect its taste, and the coffee bean flavor can be enhanced by length of time it is roasted. Conversely, roasting them too long or too little can also destroy the flavor. Different kinds of beans also require different methods of coffee roast because some beans are better enhanced with a short roast times while others are better complemented by darker and longer roasts. There are three main classifications of coffee roasts, these are French roasts, Vienna roasts, and city roast.
Also remember, that the coffee grind is an important aspect in enjoying the full flavor of the coffee along with its roast.
For city roasts, the beans are usually cooked until light or medium brown in color and the surface of the bean shows a faint black veins. This type is popularly used for many kinds of Latin American coffees and the roasting process can easily be distinguished by its popping or cracking sound while cooking. The sound actually is similar to that of popcorn, although it is a little less loud.
Vienna roast are also known as continental roasts or light French roasts. This type of coffee roast is darker than the city kind and is cooked for a bit longer past the first cracking stage until the second crack. The sound made during the second crack isn’t as loud as the first crack because the heat acts from the cellulose of the bean instead of the coffee bean expanding like it does in the first crack.
French roast is the darkest type of roast and most commonly found in the marketplace. This kind is the trickiest type of roast to master because if it is left too long the beans can burn and end up with a very bitter tasting flavor.
