Use LPN Courses To Find Out About The Physical Demands Of The LPN Role
Many people do not know about the physical aspects of life as an LPN (licensed practical nurse). The LPN role involves a lot of physical work as LPNs are expected to help lift and or move patients from one place to another. That is why some LPN courses lay special emphasis on providing their students with the physical training that they would require in order to carry out these tasks. Sometimes the patient is not as cooperative and can very well turn violent. It is on such occasions that LPNs are susceptible to injuries.
A good LPN course needs to make sure that the students are physically conditioned so that they can effectively do the many physical tasks associated with their role as an LPN.
The following should provide a good summary of the sort of physical criteria that the typical LPN will need to expect:
- Be mentally prepared to lift heavy objects, these objects can sometimes be in excess of 70 pounds.
- Be ready to be constantly on the move, whether it’s moving patients from one place to another or helping make beds.
- Many a time you will be required to move objects such as stretchers, beds and other heavy equipment. Sometimes these tasks last for the whole 8 hour shift.
- LPNs can be called upon at any time, even at odd hours of the night. And although they are paid accordingly, the timings may end up disturbing your normal routine.
- Some tasks require a lot of mental concentration, such as injecting patients with their medicine and administering IV’s. There is no chance for error in these jobs as even the slightest mistake can cause a lot of problems for the patient.
- You may also very well have to help change the position of bed ridden and old patients as they are not or unwilling to change their positions themselves.
- Do not expect to get any sort of rest. A typical day as an LPN involves running from one place to another, either to assist staff or to move medical equipment from one place to another.
The points mentioned above provide a realistic view of the many physicality’s associated with the LPN role. Those studying to become LPNs also get the opportunity to practically experience these physical tasks in the practical phase of LPN courses. This phase is also very useful in understanding just what sort of things an LPN is expected to do in the workplace.
