Varieties of Antique Mantel Clocks
There are numerous antique mantle or mantel clocks on the market today as the mantle clock was the earliest mass produced clock designed for the public. It is possible to pick up a decent mantle clock for a very affordable price based on the type of clock you desire.
Mantle clocks vary in cost from around the $40 to thousands of dollars based on just what design, kind, condition and age of mantle clock you would like. The limit you spend on your own mantel clock is determined by your budget, for example it is possible to buy a nice mantel clock with wooden case for around $40. If you prefer a nice French Spelter clock from the 18th or 19th century then you may pay two or three thousand dollars for a good conditioned clock.
Art Deco mantel clocks are very popular right now and you will need to pay a premium price for a good one. However some of the other designs including the French spelter clock with garniture are not so popular and you can buy this type of clock for a decent price.
Mantel clocks which are made from slate and marble are very heavy but make impressive showpieces in any home. Clocks made from bronze, spelter, cooper, brass, silverplate, silver and gold are also very nice mantel clocks, clocks made from silver and gold will cost a lot more than most but can be a great investment. A cheaper option would be to buy a clock made with a wooden case such as walnut, fruitwood, maple, oak, boxwood or mahogany.
Other materials which mantle clocks can be produced from are tortoiseshell, ceramics and porcelain. However, these materials are more delicate and so over time many have been damaged or broken, not as many examples of mantel clocks made from these materials are left so the price for a good example is very high. No matter what kind of clock you buy, you will have to make sure the interior workings and clock parts are present and operating. If you are unsure about clocks its best to get an expert to check the clock over before you purchase it.
