We understand how important it is to protect ourselves when we go out into the sun. One of the biggest risks that we try to protect ourselves from is skin cancer due to UV radiation. Being safe we will apply sun screen, wear hats or avoid being outside during the peak times of the day. UV rays don’t just harm our skin it can also harm our eyes. Wearing sunglasses can drastically reduce the amount of UV radiation our eyes come in contact with.

When searching for a good pair of sunglasses it is paramount to find a pair that first and foremost has plenty of UV protection. The misconception is that the darker the shades are the better protected your eyes are. This is not totally accurate. UV radiation can bounce through dark tinted plastic if it isn’t properly coated with a UV protectorate. The best sunglasses will offer 99% to 100% UV protection.

To maximize protection from the sun you could also look for a pair of sunglasses that offer polarized lenses. Polarized lenses are good for blocking the glare that comes from reflective surfaces. Someone that spends long periods of time on water fishing or snow skiing will benefit the most from polarized lenses. The thing to remember is that just because a lens is polarized doesn’t mean it is UV safe.

Protecting our eyes is not just limited to those with perfect vision. There are alternatives to those that need prescription glasses to see as well. Any optometrist can fit you for prescription sunglasses. These sunglasses can offer as much protection against the harmful UV rays and glare as regular sunglasses. The biggest benefit with prescription sunglasses is that a vision impaired person can still see while wearing them.

Protecting our skin and eyes from the sun is very important especially if we are exposed for a considerable length of time. Wearing sunglasses can protect our eyes from the UV radiation and from glare off of reflective surfaces just like wearing sun screen will protect our skin.
