What Is Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance is a condition which is closely related to type-2 diabetes. The condition actually precludes diabetes and fortunately enough is merely a warning because unlike its more advanced cousin it can be reversed. What happens in people who are healthy is that after they eat a meal the pancreas begins a normal pace of insulin production to be used to bring blood sugar levels down from elevated ranges. Meanwhile the food that is being broken down by the digestive track is turning that food into blood sugars and depositing the sugars into the blood. In people who are healthy this duality leads to relative harmony and blood sugar levels never nature out of a safe normal zone.
In people who have insulin resistance however the harmony is usually starting the break. The pancreas continues to produce healthy amounts of insulin however the cells of the body are less sensitive to rising amounts of insulin and as a result the blood sugar levels climb a bit higher than normal and remain a bit higher than normal. This isn’t altogether bad however when the process is repeated meal after meal, day after day, for years on end damage to the body slowly builds up and insulin resistance gets worse and worse leading to full blown diabetes.
A main difference between insulin resistance and diabetes is that the body is less resistant to the hormone insulin and that the condition is still reversible. In people who have not yet developed diabetes they have the ability to improve insulin sensitivity and reverse insulin resistance to the point where blood sugar levels return to normal ranges. For people who have let their condition advance to diabetes however their has usually been enough damaged inflicted due to elevated blood sugar levels to suggest reversal of the condition is unlikely.
What’s important to remember is that insulin resistance is a reversible condition if you are able to change your habits for the benefit of your long term health. Insulin resistance is not a condition to take lightly. It is basically pre-diabetes and when your doctor diagnoses you with insulin resistance you need to take it very seriously. Begin the process of changing your diet for the better and increase your daily levels of physical activity. You will be happy you did later in life.
