Southwestern rugs are those rugs with traditional patterns from the southwestern corner of the united states. They have a lot of natural subtle colors and small geometric patterns as a rule and they fit in well with many styles of interiors, particularly with country and traditional styles. There are a lot of these rugs for sale and you will find them in many stores as well as online and in catalogs, so much so that you may not be sure what to choose for the best. Here are a few guidelines to help you know what to look out for when buying.

1. Avoid Paying Too Much

Some southwestern rugs continue to be hand made by skilled craftsmen and women in traditional areas. Some are machine made and some are hand made using cheap labor from the far east. You need to know the difference before you shell out a large sum of money for a “genuine” hand-crafted traditional rug.

2. Avoid Buying the Wrong Color

Not every color of southwestern floor rug will go with your room decoration and some rooms will not suit any of the traditional southwestern rugs. Make sure that the shades in the rug tie in with other items and accessories in the room or choose another color (for your room or your rug). If you are ready to redecorate, one thing you can do is to start with a rug your love and create a color scheme from it.

3. Avoid Buying the Wrong Size Rug

Most of these rugs are rectangular in shape but you need to take care with the size. Too small a rug for your floor area and it looks as if you could not afford the right size. If your rug is too large however it will look like it is swamping your room. If you are not sure what size to buy, create several rug sizes out of old newspaper and see which size fits best within your room.
