Where to sell gold jewelry is often a question that crosses Yahoo Answers and other similar online help pages. But many of the answers only seem to recommend online buyers for those wanting to sell gold jewelry. And while some online gold buying companies are legitimate, the internet isn’t the only place you can sell your gold.

If you’ve done some homework, you may already know that locally pawnshops aren’t always the best place to sell your gold items. They tend to loan money for your goods, which means they end up with a lot of stuff when their customers don’t return for their goods. And jewelry seems to be one of the biggest ticket items that pawnbrokers receive. So in order to really profit from their sales, they often offer a very low price for the precious metal.

Local jewelry stores and the new gold buying stores tend to give better prices (as much as 80% of the spot price) for your gold. And, if you are selling gold jewelry that‘s old, you could lose money if the piece is worth more for it’s historical value.

Estate or antique dealers may be the way to go if you believe your pieces are rare or very old. Just be aware that you may need to pay a small fee for them to appraise the pieces.

Auctions houses are another place you can try if you believe your pieces are worth more than just the value of their gold content. Just remember that you will need to cover any fees that the auction house may charge and there’s always a chance your piece won’t get a high enough bid for what you’re asking.

And finally, keep in mind that when you’re dealing with any gold buyer, whether it’s online or offline, shop around. And when you’re in doubt about a company, check with the Better Business Bureau first. So the next time you’re asking yourself or others, where to sell gold jewelry, don’t just consider an online buyer. There may be a local business that you can sell your gold jewelry to and get your cash right away.
