If you own a dog, you will come to find that having a dog cage will prove to be a worthwhile investment for both dog and owner alike; a trend that is presently growing in the country.

Not only is a cage (also commonly referred to as a crate) a safe haven for your dog, but will keep an unsupervised pet from getting into mischief. Before you leave, make sure your dog has food, water, and a few toys to keep him content and you won’t have to worry about any messes on the floor or chewed-up belongings.

Don’t think that it’s as simple as merely purchasing a cage and placing your dog into it right away. The cage will be an unfamiliar place that he or she will have to get used to, and eventually associate the crate as a place that provides security and safety. A dog’s first impression of the cage will be a very important one and shouldn’t be rushed; let him have plenty of time and space to check it out freely, maybe even placing a tempting treat inside or a toy to encourage positive vibes. Afterwards, your pet will see that the cage isn’t a threat.

Another factor to keep in mind is the size of the crate in comparison to your dog. A good rule of thumb is to make sure your dog can completely stand on all fours without ducking, and be able to comfortably turn around inside of the crate. If your dog is currently a puppy you will want a crate large enough for growing room, so take your breed into consideration of how large he or she will get then plan your crate size accordingly; hopefully you won’t have to buy another one later on.

Dog cages are pretty much hassle-free; easy to assemble and collapse, which makes it much simpler if you find yourself traveling and have to take your pet along. The quality of your crate depends on what you’re willing to spend, and in the case of purchasing a dog crate, you usually get what you pay for; so shop around for one that is built to last for the long-haul.
